Astoria runs from the East River and Astoria Park inland past Steinway Street to the Grand Central Parkway, with Ditmars Boulevard at the top and the elevated train over 31st Street through the middle. Its streets are lined with two-family brick and frame houses, rows of attached homes and walk-up apartment buildings, many with a basement or cellar under them. Mold in Astoria usually has a water story behind it: a bathroom leak into the apartment below, a damp cellar, a pipe that weeps inside a wall. This page covers mold removal in Astoria and the water damage that leads to it.

Where Astoria mold comes from
The EPA puts it simply: the key to mold control is moisture control. In Astoria’s housing, the moisture tends to come from a few places. In walk-ups and two-family houses, bathrooms and kitchens sit one above another, so a failed tub seal or toilet connection upstairs shows up as a stain and then mold on the ceiling below. Cellars and basements in older houses stay damp, and stored boxes and carpet against a foundation wall give mold something to grow on. And in heavy rain, basements anywhere in the city can take water: the NYC Health Department’s lesson from Hurricane Ida is that rainfall flooding can happen anywhere, not only on the waterfront.
The EPA says water-damaged areas and items should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. If a leak in an Astoria apartment was mopped up but the ceiling or wall behind it stayed wet, that is where mold can start later.

Small patches and larger jobs
The EPA says that if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet, roughly 3 feet by 3 feet, in most cases you can handle it yourself. NYC’s Health Department suggests soap and water or dish detergent on hard surfaces, waterproof gloves, keeping children and pets away, drying the area completely and washing or throwing away the rags. The EPA does not recommend bleach as a routine practice in mold cleanup.
Larger areas, mold inside walls or ceilings, and mold after sewage or floodwater are for professionals. The mold remediation in Queens page explains how the work runs, and mold inspection in Queens covers the independent assessment New York requires for covered work.
Astoria apartments: the owner’s duty
A walk-up with three or more apartments falls under Local Law 55 of 2018. It requires owners of those buildings to keep tenants’ apartments free of mold and pests, to safely fix the conditions that cause them, such as leaks, and to inspect units every year. In buildings with 10 or more apartments, mold covering more than 10 square feet has to be assessed and removed by workers holding a New York State Department of Labor mold license, and the assessor and the remover must be independent of each other.
If you rent in Astoria and see a leak or mold, HPD’s advice is to tell your landlord first. If it is not fixed, or the repair is not being done safely, file a complaint online or call 311. Keep dated photos.
Two-family houses
Owners of Astoria’s two-family houses are often landlord and neighbor at once. A two-family house has fewer than three apartments, so it falls below Local Law 55’s line, but NYC’s Health Department says owners of a building of any size where a tenant has been diagnosed with moderate or severe persistent asthma must also keep the home free of mold. Either way, fixing the leak early is usually a smaller job than the mold that follows. If water from your unit reached your tenant’s, photograph both and tell your insurer about both; check your own policy or ask your agent.

When water comes in
If the problem right now is water rather than mold, start with water removal in Queens: switch power off only from a dry place, never touch switches while standing in water, shut the main valve if a pipe is the source, and photograph everything. Then dry quickly, because that is what stops the mold. Repairs after the drying are covered on water damage repair in Queens.
