Woodside sits between Sunnyside and Jackson Heights, with Roosevelt Avenue and the 7 train overhead, Queens Boulevard on the south, Northern Boulevard on the north and Woodside Avenue winding through. It is a mix of apartment buildings, including large co-op complexes, and streets of attached and semi-attached houses with basements. Mold in Woodside usually follows water: a leak in a bathroom above, a basement that took rain, a damp wall that never quite dried. This page covers mold removal in Woodside and how to stop it coming back.

Mold starts with water
The EPA’s rule is that the key to mold control is moisture control. Its guidance is to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. When that does not happen, mold grows where the moisture stays: behind a vanity, under a bathroom floor, at the bottom of a basement wall, inside a closet against an outside wall. Cleaning the mold without fixing the water only resets the clock. NYC’s Health Department says that if mold returns quickly, there may be an underlying problem such as a water leak.

Basements after rain
The NYC Health Department’s lesson from Hurricane Ida is that rainfall flooding can happen anywhere in the city, with low-lying areas and basement apartments at higher risk. DEP lists groundwater through foundation cracks or a leaking floor drain, and sewer backups through basement connections, among the four ways the city floods. A Woodside basement that took water and was mopped but not dried is a place mold can appear later. If the water came from the sewer, the IICRC S500 counts it as Category 3 and the EPA advises a professional with experience in contaminated water. See sewage cleanup in Queens.
Cleaning small areas
For a patch under about 10 square feet, roughly 3 feet by 3 feet, the EPA says in most cases you can handle it yourself. The Health Department’s steps:
- Keep children and pets away.
- Use water and soap or dish detergent on hard surfaces.
- Wear waterproof gloves.
- Dry the area completely.
- Wash or throw away sponges and rags.
The EPA does not recommend bleach as a routine practice in mold cleanup, and warns never to mix cleaning products.

Apartments and the owner’s duty
In buildings with three or more apartments, Local Law 55 of 2018 requires owners to keep units free of mold and pests, to safely fix the conditions that cause them and to inspect every year. In buildings with 10 or more apartments, mold over 10 square feet must be handled by assessment and remediation workers holding a New York State Department of Labor license, and the same worker may not do both. Tenants who see a leak or mold should tell the landlord; if it is not fixed or the repair is unsafe, file a complaint online or call 311.
Larger jobs
Mold over about 10 square feet, inside walls or ceilings, or after sewage or floodwater, is for professionals. The work follows an independent assessment and ends with a post-remediation assessment for covered work, as the NYS Mold Program requires. If the water is still there
Mold can wait; water cannot. If there is water now, read water removal in Queens: power off only from a dry place, never touch switches while standing in water, shut the main valve if a pipe is the source, and photograph everything.

Questions people ask
Why does mold keep coming back in my bathroom?
Often because the moisture behind it has not been fixed. NYC’s Health Department says mold returning quickly may mean an underlying problem such as a water leak.
Can I paint over mold?
No. Clean small areas, dry them fully and fix the moisture first. Paint over mold or damp surfaces hides the problem.
